What Sets Us Apart?

  • Traits of Character: “Fruit of the Spirit”: This character education framework was designed by EDS teachers. Using Galatians 5: 22-23 as a guide, teachers developed and gathered ideas for promoting a different Fruit of the Spirit each month (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control) in classrooms, in Tuesday and Thursday chapel services, and throughout the school. Each month, there is a school project related to the featured “fruit,” and a different grade level is charged with designing a banner to represent the particular focus word. This program is woven throughout the EDS curriculum.

  • The Fruit of the Spirit CDs: Episcopal Day School is blessed with the talents of our music teacher, Mrs. Lisa CD100_outGessner.  When we first introduced the Fruit of the Spirit Character Education Program, Mrs. Gessner was inspired to write songs for each character trait.  Last year, these songs were taught to our students in music class and beautifully presented by our students in our spring musical.  This summer, Mrs. Gessner, along with EDS music club students, recorded ten of her original songs into her first CD titled, “The Fruit of the Spirit: Songs to Live By for Children of All Ages.”  The CDs are available for sale in the EDS school office and on Mrs. Gessner’s website: www.lisagessner.com.  Songbooks are also available.  Your child will enjoy singing along to these songs while filling their hearts and minds with virtues to live by. Thank you Mrs. Gessner for giving us such a wonderful gift!
  • Spalding Phonics: Provides instruction in phonics and the 72 phonograms in the English language that is explicit, systematic, interactive, diagnostic, and multisensory. Students learn phonemic awareness, phonics with handwriting, spelling rules, and writing high-frequency vocabulary words.
  • Thinking Maps: Eight specific visual patterns are used to help organize thoughts and information. Visualizing thinking allows students to have a concrete image of their abstract thoughts. Visual representations enhance the brain’s natural ability to detect and construct meaningful patterns. Thinking Maps reduce anxiety by providing familiar visual patterns for thinking and working with complex ideas and situations, and allowing them to begin writing with little hesitation.
  • Project-based Learning / Individual Projects: Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they’re studying. Students may also choose to complete an individual project in which they research a topic of interest and share the results of their research with their classmates through a presentation style of their choice (i.e. Power Point Presentation, display, oral report).
