Third Grade

    Mrs. Ambersley and Ms. Hutson

We are having such a fun year in third grade! Team teaching is wonderful, both for the teachers and the students. Both Mrs. Ambersley and Ms. Hutson are able to teach what they really love. Their love of their subjects has really carried over to the students. You’ve never seen a more energized and enthusiastic group of children! You can see the fun we’ve had on fieldtrips and in the classroom.

We’ve been very busy in Language Arts lately. For each novel that we read we’ve developed “comprehension journals” where vocabulary, main ideas, and summaries are written down. This has helped students gain more understanding of the novels that we’ve read which, in turn, increases comprehension. Hooray! Cursive writing is underway. To date, every child has mastered half of the lower case cursive alphabet. Our plan is to be finished learning cursive (both uppercase and lower case) by mid February. The students’ creative writing has really grown stronger. Their vocabulary has developed and individual “Writer’s voices” can really be seen in their work. We’ve also been hard at work with our grammar lessons. The third graders know how to properly write a friendly letter, how to use apostrophes appropriately for both singular and plural nouns, and they are doing a great mastering all new grammar concepts that are put before them. It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come this year!

In social studies we’ve enjoyed learning about landforms, citizenship, and communities. We’ve built pueblos like the Hopi inhabited, written creation myths like the Iroquois, and now we are studying early European colonists; specifically those who settled Jamestown and those who live in Salem, Massachusetts. We are really examining the impact that the environment has on the lives of the people who live there.
