Miss Alice's Pre-K

Happy New Year!  There sure has been a lot happening in Pre-K since the fall.  In November our classroom turned into a Native American Village and we learned all about the lifestyle of the first natives to our country.  The Pilgrims arrived in the Mayflower, and Indian drums were playing to welcome them.  Our unit of study ended with a Thanksgiving feast for all three Pre-K classes.  We made pumpkin pies and cranberry-orange relish to share with everyone!

axmas0708.jpg     With the beginning of Advent, waiting for the birthday of Jesus was our focus.  How we loved doing the play of this event, and everyone tried many parts.  We even had a stable in our classroom!  Did you know that we have 4th grade buddies?  We get together with them about once a month for a special activity.  During December, we made gingerbread houses with them.  It was so much fun!

awjuggleing0708.jpg     Now that it is 2008, our letter of the week curriculum continues.  Just a few of our New Year activities have been “juggling” with Mr. St. John, learning about Kangaroos & Koalas,  sending “love letters”,

sharing “Muffins with Moms”,

meeting an very old friend named Noah, and making our very own quilt.

awbuddies0708.jpg     But the best of all was taking a very special field trip to the Post Office to mail a Valentine with our 4th grade buddies!  There is so much to do in Pre-K every day, and we love learning so many new things!

Happy New Year!

In January…We learned about animals that hibernate

And birds – not all migrate!

We watched birds eat the seed we put in the trees above,

Then in “Ll” Week we wrote stories about people we love.

We laced lavender and lime green “Ll”s with our hands,

Then traced our letters in the sand.

(We also made lovely ladybugs!)

During “Mm” Week we experimented with magnets and learned about money,

Then had Muffins with Mom – She said “I’ll always be your honey!”

In the month of February we always have fun.

Partying and giving Valentine’s to everyone.

During “Nn” Week we learned about nature and nine,

Tasted and graphed nuts of all kinds.

Nine noodles on a necklace we strung on navy yarn,

Then moved on to “Oo”, printing STOP on an octagon.

We learned about life in the ocean,

And the octopus with their strange swimming motion.

During “Pp” Week we’ll read about Presidents from long ago,

And learn who’s on the penny – Do you know?

But the thing we love best, a day we hold dear,

That Pre-K looks forward to every year,

Is Pet Day, when everyone brings a pet to share,

Showing off their cats, dogs, birds, maybe even a hare!

We’ll round out the month with the study of “Qq”,

Measuring quarts, making quilts – Oh the things we will do!

In March we’ll paint our pet rocks, study rainbows and launch rockets to the moon,

Study soil, sun, sand and plant seeds – and wait for Spring – Will it come soon?

During “Tt” Week we’ll collect sets of ten,

Paint t-shirts, study temperature, turquoise – and then –

On to Easter, egg hunts and Grandparent’s Day

And hopefully lots of outdoor play.

Then to “Uu” Week with Umbrella day – rain or shine?

We’ll learn about the United States and in uniforms we’ll look fine!

April showers bring erupting volcanoes, veggies, and vases of flowers,

During “Ww” Week we weigh things, make a weather vane and study the wind’s power.

We’ll learn about wetlands and gather more knowledge

During a trip to Sandhills Community College.

For “Xx” Week a visitor will show us x-rays including pictures of arms, legs and knees.

“Yes I Can” is our theme for “Yy” Week showing off what we’ve learned – we’re as proud as you please!

May comes so fast we can hardly believe it,

Our annual International Day is a great hit.

We’ll learn about Scandinavian culture, music, and art – oh the things we will do!

Then on to “Zz” Week when we learn about the zoo.

I’ll be so sad - the year will almost be done,

But I know we’ll learn a lot and we’ll have had lots of fun.
